Purifying and transforming uranium
AREVA offers its clients a high-quality transformed product ready for enrichment using the most advanced techniques.
Conversion is one step of the fuel fabrication cycle that consists of transforming the ore concentrate into a product ready to be enriched: uranium hexafluoride (UF6).
AREVA’s COMURHEX plants carry out the conversion of ore concentrate into UF6 following a preliminary purification step. This step is intended to rid the concentrate of all its impurities.
The final delivered product is therefore compatible with the quality requirements of the most modern enrichment procedures, especially high-performance centrifuging.
AREVA also offers a range of associated services:
- Storage of ore concentrates, mines,
- UF6 container maintenance ("cylinders"): draining, cleaning, verification of various pieces, reconditioning.

We offer a conversion service, integrating the purification stage which is unique in Europe,. In addition, the proximity of our enrichment plants allows our clients to easily combine conversion and enrichment while minimizing transport.
A modern industrial tool
AREVA is investing 610 million Euros in the modernization of its two industrial sites in Pierrelatte and Malvési (France). The new procedures are at once more effective and more economic in reagents, water and energy, while at the same time emitting less waste. Water sampling will therefore be a tenth of what it was.
