Performance indicators

The AREVA Way does not limit itself to words; it translates them into actions. Its various commitments are therefore integrated into the group management system (strategic action plan, budget, reporting, etc.) relating to all group organizations.

How can we evaluate our practices and drive progress?

Each commitment is subject to progress targets. Each target is detailed in several improvement criteria. This process thus organizes the 10 AREVA commitments into 34 progress targets and around 100 improvement criteria. For each of these criteria, the organizations assess their practices on a scale of 1 to 4, supported by evidence of their achievements.

These assessment levels correspond to various degrees of progress: launch, rollout, maturity and excellence. The progression demonstrates the growing expertise in methodologies, covering an ever-larger scope, with a greater involvement of stakeholders and better quality results. Self-assessment enables us to define the associated objectives and action plans.

Number of AREVA WAY self-assessments performed

In 2008, the scope covered represented over 88% of group staff.

The consolidated results of these self-assessments show that the practices promoted by the AREVA Way guidelines have, in over 80% of cases, achieved a structured deployment stage (level above or equal to 2), and, in over 41% of cases, they have already demonstrated a positive local impact on the performance of group organizations.

How can we measure our performance?

The AREVA Way guidelines enable an assessment of the maturity of our practices, but do not reflect our intrinsic performance. Our performance is reflected in our financial and extra-financial indicators.

Since 2002, the AREVA group has put in place reporting procedures for sustainable development indicators. These take into account the French NRE law (Nouvelles Rgulations Economiques), the recommendations of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the contributions of group experts representing each sustainable development initiative and area.

This report covers the following 20 areas, comprising 76 indicators: continuous progress management, water, energy, greenhouse gases, raw materials, use of hazardous substances, atmospheric emissions, water pollution, radioactive release, conventional waste, radioactive waste, environmental expenses, environmental penalties, dosimetry, security, technological risks, employment, diversity, health, corporate patronage and partnerships.

For each indicator, the measurement protocol details its scope, frequency, associated definitions, calculation method and the data to be transmitted. In 2008, more than 250 industrial sites and service companies participated in the reporting, representing around 1,500 people.

Thanks to the report, AREVA has reliable figures that support internal control at all levels of the organization and enrich external communication with concrete elements.

Over the course of budgetary reviews, business units present their AREVA Way self-assessment results, as well as their financial and extra-financial result indicators.

Communication of our results

Every year, the AREVA group publishes these sustainable development results through its Annual Report and its Facts and Figures Supplement.

The reporting of extra-financial indicators comes under particular scrutiny. It rests on measurement guidelines, a network of contributors and validators, and a dedicated information system. Figure checking audits are carried out internally and by the statutory auditor.
