Tangible results
Boosting local economies
AREVA works with local partners to encourage local development and diversification of the economic environment.
More specifically, AREVA relies on AREVADELFI, a company that began operations in 1998 with reindustrialization projects in the Saône and Loire labor markets. Today AREVADELFI is involved at all of AREVA’s industrial bases, providing financial support in the form of investment or growth agreements with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). One particular initiative, known as AREVADELFI HANDICAP, was set up to foster companies developed by disabled people.
In 2008, 15 projects were approved by the committee, including 2 with disabled entrepreneurs. These projects represent 542 direct jobs over 3 years.
In the Meuse and Haute-Marne regions of France, the Bure laboratory has been set up and the feasibility of a deep geological waste is being studied. About 150 jobs have been created and business development training initiatives have been implemented.
Continuing humanitarian aid initiatives
Since 2002, the Patronage and Partnerships Committee has selected projects submitted to the group. It favors projects related to North-South development, energy and climate change, emergency aid and cultural patronage.
The AREVA Foundation
Created in 2007, the AREVA Foundation, supports developmental aid programs in countries where the group operates. It focuses on 2 areas:
- Health: financial support for medical organizations to train local teams, renovate health care centers and purchase expensive medical equipment
- Knowledge sharing: improving the level of education available to disadvantaged children and encouraging adult training, particularly through volunteer work
Getting involved in the fight against AIDS
AREVA has been committed to the fight against AIDS since 2006 and has set up a prevention and education initiative for employees in France, India, Niger, China and Côte d'Ivoire. The AREVA Foundation supported the Sidaction 2008 fundraiser by organizing donation collection and events with Sidaction volunteers and group doctors.
In countries where the group operates, AREVA works with NGOs on the ground to fight against AIDS. The group is conducting a series of assessment and prevention initiatives in Niger, where it has signed a partnership agreement with the Nigerian government and public interest group Esther. In the fight against AIDS in South Africa, the AREVA Foundation supports 2 projects—one with Sidaction and another with Secours Populaire—for children and their families.
AREVA IN NIGER
AREVA’s mining sites are located in an arid region. The cities of Arlit and Akokan have more than 80,000 residents. SOMAIR and COMINAK employ 2,000 people between the 2 communities and ensure employees and their families receive free medical care. With each family having 8 children, on average, this amounts to around 20,000 people.
AREVA manages the 2 hospitals where most medical care is provided (e.g., surgery, maternity, dental, ear-nose-throat, ophthalmology). These establishments are also open to the rest of the population in the region, which is in fact one of the best cared for in all of Nigeria. SOMAIR and COMINAK employees and their families account for two-thirds of the hospitals’ procedures and operating costs. The care provided to the rest of the population represents one-third of all treatment, but more than 50% of medical procedures and major surgeries.
AREVA is also a stakeholder in a public-private partnership project in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
AREVA is a financial partner in an ambitious socioeconomic project that aims to bring electricity to nearly 50,000 people around the city of Arlit (suburbs). The community is the contracting authority for this project, which is the collective initiative of a partnership between representatives from the public (towns), private (AREVA) and civil (NGO Droit à l’Energie SOS Futur) sectors.
