Risk management and prevention

Our commitment: Better understand the human factor to better prevent and control risk

Nuclear safety is a top priority for AREVA. The group has established an organizational structure and tools to identify, anticipate and manage risks linked to group operations.

  • Objectives and results

    Concrete objectives

    • Deploy the Human and Organizational Factors initiative across the entire group
    • Set up event analysis training that incorporates the human factor
    • Conduct or update accidental risk assessments for all sites with significant environmental aspects (SEA)
    • Conduct or update health risk assessments for all SEA sites
    • Have up-to-date soil condition data for all SEA sites

    Tangible results

A high level of safety and transparency

    A safety charter

Managing and preventing technological risks is a top priority that is firmly entrenched in the corporate culture of the group’s subsidiaries. In 2005, AREVA reaffirmed the importance of risk management and prevention by publishing the Safety Charter, which helps to standardize practices and share knowledge.

    Transparency

AREVA publicly releases inspection reports on the state of safety at its nuclear facilities, which are conducted by in-house inspectors and external inspectors from national safety authorities.

The 2008 report reveals a busy year and identifies 4 major areas of progress:

    • Strengthening the culture of safety, including among sub-contractors
    • Remaining vigilant during temporary operations (e.g. worksites)
    • Improving the response to early warning signs
    • Preparing to respond to crisis situations thqt do not pose a threat to people or the environment

    A methodical safety analysis

    Incident monitoring and event analysis

Maintaining a culture of safety is a crucial element in improving performance. Each safety incident is subject to in-depth technical analysis. In recent years, the human factor has been the major cause. To remedy this situation, training in event and “near-event” analysis was established in 2007

    Preventive measures

The group tries to take preventive measures in order to identify and assess risk:

    • Hazard studies are conducted and regularly updated for all nuclear and environmentally regulated sites
    • SEA sites have implemented simplified environmental risk assessments to assess the relevance and reliability of preventive and protective measures

AREVA includes health aspects in its risk and impact studies.

Strategy

The group offers comprehensive solutions that meet the major global energy challenges by reducing CO2 emissions.
