Mining
The Bakouma deposit was discovered in the 1960s. Although the deposit is small in terms of quantity, its ore has a high uranium content, approximately 2700 ppm. In parallel to excellent exploration results, investigations regarding ore processing have yielded satisfactory results and project development is progressing steadily.
Following a test phase commenced in 2010, the project will gradually ramp up to full production by 2014-2015. AREVA Ressources Centrafrique now holds the mining permit for this deposit.
In August 2008, AREVA and the Central African government signed an agreement which stipulates that the country will receive financial support of 18 billion CFA francs over 5 years. It also provides for the construction of infrastructure and employment of 900 people (primarily from the region) once the mine is operating at full capacity.
