Niger: Helping populations hit by famine in 2010

Combating famine
Faced with the last year’s low harvest yields caused by lack of rain, the government of Niger made a call for national and international solidarity in March 2010 to counter the food crisis threatening nearly 8 million persons in Niger.
A responsible partner
AREVA, a partner of Niger for over half a century, immediately answered “here!” The Group and the AREVA Foundation mobilized to organize emergency food aid as quickly as possible in coordination with the Cellule Nationale de Crise Alimentaire set up by the Niger authorities.
Adhering to its partnership policy to work with NGOs present in the field, AREVA also took steps to work alongside the Tanafout NGO of Niger to help conduct the operation.
The transport of two thousand tons of food
AREVA’s initial support comprised the purchase and transport of a thousand tons of food for the populations in the Agadez region to palliate the shortage of agricultural products. This aid, which consisted in 1100 tons of provisions – millet, rice, feed for livestock – was delivered by the month of May.
In light of the seriousness of the situation, AREVA backed up this first shipment by new deliveries in July 2010. This second phase comprised distributing food supplements to children in the Agadez and Tahoua regions and in helping to protect the herds of nomad populations by furnishing 1000 tons of feed for livestock.
In all, AREVA will have helped to send over 2000 tons of food supplies.
