Mongolia: creation of a laparoscopic surgery center

The AREVA Foundation provides support for the Actions Mongolie association and is currently funding the purchase of a rod lens laparoscope for the Shastin Hospital in Ulaanbaatar.
Equipment and training
End September, the AREVA Foundation signed a patronage agreement with the Actions Mongolie association. AREVA’s support comprises equipping the digestive surgery department of the Shastin Hospital in Ulaanbaatar with a rod lens laparoscope to perform minimally invasive examinations of the digestive system; it is also helping the hospital staff develop the practice of laparoscopic surgery on a daily basis.
The advantages of this operating technique are numerous:
- for the patient:
- a shorter stay in the hospital, with less risk of nosocomial infection,
- minimum scarring and less pain
- for the hospital:
- lower operation cost (shorter hospitalization period).
The project also includes training so that local teams can work without outside aid. Training will be given at the hospital and consists of six sessions scheduled over a five-year period. In addition to these sessions, apprenticeships will be set up by Doctor Lagoutte and his teams.
The Actions Mongolie Association
Backed by 20 years’ experience in the fields of ophthalmology and medical equipment, the Actions Mongolie Association starting helping nomads of the steppes in 2001 by setting up sponsorships for Mongolian doctors to work with French doctors.
In 2009, the association engaged Dr. Jacques Lagoutte, a digestive system surgeon and previously intern and assistant clinic director with the Lyon Hospitals, to evaluate the progress made in laparoscopy at the Ulaanbaatar public hospitals with a view to setting up a unit specialized in laparoscopic surgery.
A renown Ulaanbaatar hospital
Shastin Hospital, one of the public hospitals of Ulaanbaatar and the biggest hospital in the country, is primarily specialized in cardiology and neurology. It cares for more than 100 000 patients yearly, including 14 000 in-patients. The hospital comprises 12 departments, one of which is the digestive system surgery unit, with 9 surgeons and 45 beds for patients.
This department was identified as the hospital infrastructure the best suited for receiving the rod lens laparoscope. Local teams will thus be able to develop the laparoscopic surgery technique using this leading-edge tool.
