Encouraging girls’ education

The Association des Amis de l'Ecole Saint John, supported by the AREVA Foundation, has undertaken the construction of a boarding school for girls. It will be able to house 100 girls.

A RURAL SCHOOL WITH NO CASTE DISTINCTION

Saint John’s School is located in a rural area, 60 km west of Pondicherry, in southeastern India. A mixed facility, it accepts children within a 20 km radius, with no religious or caste distinction.

This school of 900 students, from preschool to the equivalent of high school, was established to offer high-quality education to children. The passing rate for exams of 80% attests to the school’s high education level. The school’s results are also significantly higher than the regional average (57% success rate).

CONSTRUCTION OF A BOARDING SCHOOL FOR YOUNG GIRLS

The girls’ boarding school operates on the model of the boys’ boarding school, which already operates on the school site. It is equally open to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, orphans, lost children, or those who can only attend boarding school. It will host 80 to 100 girls between the ages of 11 and 17.

SUPPORTING GIRLS’ EDUCATION

In this region, girls typically leave school at the age of 12 or 13 in order to help their families before getting married. The presence of a boarding school for young girls is a strong example of raising awareness of women’s education, by enabling 100 of them to continue their studies.
