Clowns in hospitals
The Théodora association improves the lives of hospitalized children by sending clowns into hospital pediatric units. The AREVA Foundation supports these efforts.
SEND IN THE CLOWNS
Created in 1993 in Switzerland, Théodora currently covers 118 hospitals in the world and operates in more than 10 pediatric units in France.
Each year, 20,000 children receive individual visits from one of the association’s 20 clowns. These “Dr. Dreams” are professional artists who are trained to work in the hospital setting.
OVERCOMING HOSPITALIZATION CHALLENGES THROUGH LAUGHTER
For children, being hospitalized is often a traumatic experience, lived through far from the home environment and the family’s affection. The clowns of the Théodora Association visit once a week to help these children forget where they are and their illness for a minute or two.
AREVA Foundation increased its support in 2012 to include visits of these “Dream Doctors” to the orthopedic surgery and intensive care units of Robert Debré hospital.
In 2011, Dream Doctors paid 79 visits to more than 1,280 hospitalized children, enabling them to escape the reality of their illnesses for a few moments. With them, 3,800 parents, brothers, sisters and caregivers eagerly await the Dream Doctors, to put a smile back on the faces of the children.
