WEST AFRICA: SUPPORT FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

Humanitarian action in Burkina Faso and Niger
In September 2009, Burkina Faso and Niger were struck by torrential rains. The group offered its assistance to affected populations.
RECONSTRUCTION OF DAMAGED SCHOOLS IN BURKINA FASO WITH PLAN INTERNATIONAL
In early September 2009, the floods that struck Burkina Faso claimed 14 lives and left more than 150,000 people homeless in the country’s capital (Ouagadougou) and its surroundings. The waters swept away bridges and roads, impeding transportation and making it difficult to provide help to victims. Schools, houses, and hospitals were also seriously damaged. A call for international aid was sent out.
Through financial support, AREVA aimed to strengthen Plan International’s efforts that were already underway on site.
In conjunction with the French Ministry of Education and local authorities, AREVA concentrated its efforts in Ouagadougou on rehabilitating schools damaged by the floods. The group’s contribution helped several thousands of students to return to school quickly.
EXCEPTIONAL ACTION PLAN FOR THE AGADEZ REGION OF NIGER
Several municipalities in the Agadez region, in northern Niger, were also affected, leaving 3 dead, 79,000 people affected, and major material damages.
To support the victims, AREVA implemented an exceptional action plan, in compliance with Nigerien authorities.
The group provided emergency assistance in the form of 60 metric tons of vital supplies. For all areas affected, a complementary aid program was launched in partnership with regional authorities and charitable organizations on site.
It called for:
- rebuilding of roads and dykes destroyed by the storms,
- provision of tents for the homeless,
- dredging of irrigation wells buried by the floods,
- extension of water supply points to the welcome sites for flood victims.
