FRANCE: SUPPORTING SECOURS POPULAIRE FRANÇAIS

Educational assistance for underprivileged students
Literacy is an extremely important factor in social integration. To help improve access to education, Secours Populaire Français (SPF) offers learning and educational support initiatives for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
ASSISTANCE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
SPF has undertaken learning and educational assistance initiatives for more than 20 years.
These programs are based on the development of educational, one-on-one relationships between organization volunteers and children, enabling educational support as well as access to cultural and leisure activities in venues such as museums, theaters and libraries. More than simply providing help with homework, the program develops real human relationships that help children discover new horizons.
In 2009, 28,458 people received educational assistance or reading help in the fight against illiteracy. In addition to these efforts, SPF helped 120,727 individuals to access culture and leisure activities.
GIVING CHILDREN THE TOOLS FOR SUCCESS
The AREVA Foundation invests in this effort to provide learning and educational support as well as access to cultural activities by purchasing teaching materials and financing cultural outings. This support goes to 12 SPF locations, in the le Gard, Isère, Essonne, and Hauts de Seine departments of France—sites where the group is also located.
In all, 133 children benefit from the project, as well as their 99 teachers and volunteer assistants.
