Building an information base for a Sichuan school

Secours Populaire Français (SPF) has taken part in a project to rebuild a school in China following the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan. The AREVA Foundation has provided support by organizing and purchasing equipment for an information and educational center.

2008 EARTHQUAKE LEADS TO OPPORTUNITY FOR MULTI-SCHOOOL COMPLEX

Following the damage caused by the May 2008 earthquake in the Sichuan region, it was decided to combine 4 schools on 1 site, located in Deyang, in the Huangxu canton. The buildings of this new complex meet earthquake protection standards and accommodates 900primary and middle school students.

In the framework of this project, SPF, in partnership with the Association du Peuple Chinois Pour l’Amitié avec l’Etranger (APCAE), has supported the creation of an information and educational center on the school site. The AREVA Foundation has joined the project by organizing the space as well as purchasing several thousand books, digital books, and modern learning tools.

The center helps students increase their knowledge and succeed in their studies.

THE CHINESE SCHOOL SYSTEM

In China, primary education is required for all children until age 9. Afterwards, only 30% of students continue their education. One notable cause: a lack of educational resources, limiting access to secondary school and higher education.

"Our teacher taught us a Chinese proverb: “Studious work is the only path through the mountain of books.” But I had no idea what the mountain of books was. It wasn’t until I entered the new Document Center that I understood. I realized that the books in my backpack were just the pebbles of the mountain.” Comments from the Mengjia School pupils’ representative at the opening of the Document Center
