France: a new interest in reading with Secours populaire français

Knowing how to read is a major aspect of social integration. To overcome the difficulties and barriers to education, AREVA Foundation supports the Secours populaire français program "Giving children deprived of reading the desire to read" in the Gard, Isère, Yvelines, Essonne and Hauts-de-Seine departments of France.
A taste for a good book
The purpose of the program is to promote reading for children who are deprived of it, in three stages: the child understands what he’s reading, the child reads it all the way through, and the child wants to start all over again!
Innovative concept
As part of these activities, the "Fée des mots" publisher contributes its book collection concept designed specifically for children who are deprived of reading.
The books contain all of the known rules of speech therapy to make reading easier (simple word choices) and build on role-playing games to motivate a child by inviting him to “get inside” a character. From start to finish, the book has the child’s age and first and last names of the child who will receive it, as well as the name of an adult in his surroundings. The child becomes the hero – or heroine – of the story and is quickly captivated.
