France: Institut Pasteur - 2011

Microscopic view of a cell

AREVA Foundation and Institut Pasteur sign a new partnership agreement for Aids research.

AREVA Foundation continues to fight Aids alongside the Institut Pasteur in 2011.

Two new Institute teams will benefit from the continuing partnership:

  • the team led by Professor Olivier Schwartz, who directs the Virus and Immunity Research Unit, and
  • the team of Dr. Michaela Müller of the Retroviral Infection Regulation Unit directed by Professor Barré-Sinoussi, Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Research is being conducted along two lines

  • The first looks at the virus itself and studies mechanisms by which the virus goes from one cell to another, a stage of the viral multiplication cycle still poorly understood.
  • The second involves research into the effects of the virus on the organism. HIV-1 causes hyperactivation of the immune system, leading to chronic inflammation. The latter is largely responsible for the disease.
The goal is to understand these hyperactivation phenomena by comparing what happens in man with certain monkeys infected naturally with the simian virus (SIV), which does not cause disease.

AIDS, a major public health problem

Twenty-five years after it first appeared, Aids is more than ever a major public health issue. More than 33 million people are HIV-positive or have Aids, most of them in Africa and in other developing countries.

In 2008, 2 million people died of Aids and some 3 million new cases of the disease were reported. Impressive research has been undertaken in recent years and important progress has been made in the global effort to control the epidemic, with increased access to prevention, treatment and care.

Despite all these efforts, 64% of those suffering from the disease are still deprived of full access to treatment. A vaccine still does not exist. That’s why it’s important to continue research and to design new strategies for therapy, for although life expectancy has increased, no treatment exists today that can cure the disease.

The Institut Pasteur

The Institut Pasteur is a renowned private foundation recognized for its contribution to the public good. Its mission is to prevent and fight disease, in France and around the world, through scientific and medical research, education and public health services.
