France : The “Magnificent Egypt” exhibition at the Calvet Museum in Avignon

Utah Beach Landing Museum

In celebration of its bicentennial, “Magnificent Egypt” will be held in five of the Calvet Museum’s large exhibition halls from June 25 to November 14, 2011.

A permanent exhibition will open in January 2012 in two of the three halls on the national historic register, with their splendid woodwork, gold and plasterwork renovated for the occasion.

The splendors of ancient Egypt

Nearly 400 pieces were selected from the Esprit Calvet bequest and from the bequests and donations of Marius Clément, Clot-Bey, and purchases made in the 19th and 20th centuries by the Calvet Foundation. The exhibition is enhanced by loans from major Paris institutions (the Louvre Museum, the National Museum of the Chateau of Malmaison, etc.) and regional museums (Orléans, Moulins, Gap), as well as from libraries (National Library of France, Catholic Institute of Paris).

AREVA has chosen to support this exceptional event and to finance all of the scenography for the temporary and permanent exhibitions, under the masterly hand of renowned architect and scenographer Philippe Pumain.

A museum of the world’s cultures

Founded in 1811, the Calvet Museum continues to fulfill its original mission today: the study, enhancement and development of its collections, and the presentation and dissemination of knowledge to a broad public, facilitating access to culture and the arts for everyone, as was the wish of its founder, Esprit Calvet, a humanist doctor who embodied the spirit of the Enlightenment.
