Key figures
- 2 reactors in South Africa (1 reactor under construction in Iran)
- 2 GWe installed
- 13.3 TWh of nuclear power generated in 2008
- 0.8% estimated percentage of electricity generated by nuclear power
- In 2008, the group extracted 3,032 tons of uranium from its 2 mining sites in Niger. This represents 25% of AREVA's annual production.
Prospects for the nuclear power market
The Gulf States (and countries in North Africa) are showing an interest in using nuclear power, including for unconventional uses such as seawater desalination. Even hydrocarbon producers plan to save their increasingly scarce and expensive resources. At the end of 2009, the United Arab Emirates signed a contract for the construction of 4 reactors with a consortium led by the Korean company Kepco.
South Africa has significant needs: although the first unit had to be postponed due to the economic and financial situation, the government continues to support nuclear power.
