Canada: St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation

Renal “telehealth” program
With the support of the AREVA Foundation, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation is developing a renal “telehealth” program in Canada. Objective: to assist isolated patients by offering videoconferencing consultations.
Caring for isolated patients
In the province of Saskatchewan, the incidence of kidney disease—particularly diabetes resulting in chronic illnesses—has increased over the past 10 years. This trend is of particular concern in the northern part of the province, where the mostly Native inhabitants have difficulty accessing health care due to the harsh climate and their distance from treatment centers.
When medicine conquers distance
The AREVA Foundation decided to support St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation in the implementation of a renal “telehealth” program. The program offers several services to remote populations:
- Consultation by videoconferencing with renal disease specialists
- Support for care and preventive advice within the community
The agreement, which was signed jointly with AREVA Resources Canada Inc. in 2008, covers a 4-year period.
