Multidisciplinary cooperation

Already working alongside the Institut Pasteur in Paris on research into patients who have been infected with HIV since birth, the AREVA Foundation has also been supporting the Institut Pasteur in Shanghai since 2005 on the issue of climate change and its impact on viral diseases.

Ecological factors and infectious diseases

This partnership concerns:

  • climate change (global warming) and its impact on carriers (mosquitoes, rodents, birds, etc.) of viral and emerging diseases,
  • prevention of infectious diseases—particularly HIV/AIDS, an important cause for AREVA.

Multidisciplinary modules combining basic and applied research have been established, particularly through the funding of scholarships, student training and forums that bring together emerging virus specialists.

Forums that reaffirm AREVA’s commitment to the fight against AIDS

In 2005, an inaugural forum was organized on the “impact of climate change on emerging diseases”.

In 2006, the second AREVA-Institut Pasteur forum addressed the question of “climate change and its impact on viral disease carriers”. On this occasion, more than a hundred participants had an opportunity to discuss the ecological factors that support the introduction or re-emergence of infectious diseases in humans or animals.

A scientific seminar on AIDS also brought together researchers physicians, and biologists to discuss state-of-the-art technological advances in this area. The event was a reaffirmation of AREVA's commitment to the fight against AIDS.

In 2008, a third forum explored “arbovirus and emerging diseases” with an emphasis on mosquitoes and ticks. Arboviruses are diseases that can be transmitted by insects feeding on the blood of their prey. As a result, these insects can transmit diseases from animals to humans.

In parallel, AIDS training designed to raise awareness about the disease among AREVA personnel is also planned.

AREVA in China

The collaboration between France and China was the key to AREVA's success. The Daya Bay and Ling Ao plants symbolize this collaboration.
