Support for victims of Cyclone Sidr: 6,000 family emergency kits distributed to victims
Following Cyclone Sidr, AREVA made a donation to France’s Red Cross. The group also supported on-site initiatives coordinated by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. More than 6,000 emergency kits were distributed, meeting the needs of over 30,000 families for 1 month.
More than 60,000 emergency kits
At last count, on November 16, 2007, Cyclone Sidr had resulted in 3,500 deaths, more than 34,508 injuries and over 1,700 missing persons. The catastrophe has affected approximately 6 million people, destroying nearly 500,000 homes in 30 districts in southwest Bangladesh. It also killed thousands of livestock and destroyed nearly 700,000 hectares of crops.
Through a donation of 50,000 euros, the group aimed to strengthen activities underway on site. AREVA’s assistance financed the supply of 6,250 family emergency kits (soap, kitchen utensils, etc.). One kit is enough to meet the needs of a family of 5 for 1 month.
Distribution of water and food
This catastrophe also resulted in the contamination of numerous water supply sources.
Thanks to the International Federation’s support and help from Red Cross participants, Bangladesh’s Red Crescent distributed food, water, family care packages, plastic tarps and clothes to thousands of homes.
