France-Niger: Un Avenir Ensemble

Nigerian girls at the lycée de la Légion d'honneur in Saint-Denis, France

Building your future

Through Un Avenir Ensemble, the AREVA Foundation is helping young Nigerian and French girls from modest or disadvantaged homes. These girls benefit from support during their studies right up until they enter the working world.

Access to secondary education for Nigerien girls

During the 2008/09 academic year, AREVA made grants available to the government of Niger for young girls engaged in advanced scientific studies. Five students have been welcomed to the Paris region. They tell of their ambition to become engineers.

Un Avenir Ensemble: mobilizing a youth network

Founded by General Kelche, the Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, this association assists youth through a sponsorship system. The system relies on mobilizing:

  • a network of members of the Legion of Honor and the National Order of Merit,
  • “decorated” holders of the military medal.

The sponsor is a link—sometimes the only one—between the sponsored youth and the rest of society. In cooperation with families and educators, sponsors offer advice and support, assist in accessing information and provide a listening ear, among other things, in order to help sponsored youth progress.

Sponsorship of Nigerian youth

In France, the link between education levels and economic development is crystal clear. This link is equally apparent in other countries and is a crucial factor in developing countries, where the education of young girls constitutes a major opportunity for the future.

It’s why the AREVA Foundation is providing Niger’s top 5 female high school graduates in 2008 with a 5-year university education. All from modest homes, these women are pursuing diplomas in France in the hopes of applying for skilled jobs when they return to their native country. These 5 students were selected by the Niger Ministry of Education based on achievement and financial need.

Supervision and support from the Legion of Honour

In September 2008, they took up residence at the Legion of Honor’s educational institution, Maison d’Éducation de la légion d’Honneur (MELH), in Saint-Denis. The first year involved transition studies to bring them up to speed, which proved to be a wise course of action.

The teaching staff, led by a respected professor, regularly assessed their progress to stay informed of their respective levels. Support from MELH teaching staff and administrators was essential this first year, helping the students adapt to scholarly demands and their new life in France.

At the same time, these young women are sponsored by 5 AREVA employees, who will mentor them right up until their first jobs. The sponsor is a link—sometimes the only one—between the sponsored youth and the rest of society. In cooperation with families and educators, sponsors offer advice and support, assist in accessing information and provide a listening ear, among other things, in order to help sponsored youth progress.

A good start

In April 2009, the women chose their subjects and registered for the 2009-2010 academic year:

  • 2 students entered a preparatory class at the Lycée Claude-Bernard
  • 3 students chose technology training at Saint-Denis (1 in management, 2 in information technology)

The very satisfying results of this partnership have led the AREVA Foundation to renew its commitment and to fund 2 additional grants for high school graduates in 2009.

Sponsorship of French youth

AREVA is also investing in the studies of 5 female French students, in partnership with the Lycée Buffon in Paris.

The school selected the candidates according to 3 criteria:

  • Determination to succeed and academic results
  • Stability of home life
  • Exemplary behavior

This individual support will assist these young women in choosing a career path and searching for jobs (drafting résumés, preparing for interviews, etc).

Currently in their final year of high school, these girls are sponsored by 5 AREVA employees who will mentor them right up until their first jobs.

AREVA in Niger

AREVA operates mining of ore bodies in Niger. On January 5, 2009, the group signed an agreement relating to mining of the new Imouraren site.
