France: 4 associations for fauna and flora

Protecting nature on the Cotentin Peninsula
AREVA is developing a partnership to promote environmental protection on the Cotentin Peninsula. These activities involve 4 complementary projects, led by 4 associations.
Partnership with the Vauville botanical garden (France)
The Vauville botanical garden near the La Hague (Manche) facility forms a link with the development and acclimatization of plants for young people. Its partnership with AREVA shows that an industrial facility can co-exist with a scientific institution that is focused on the preservation of nature.
This garden has been called “remarkable” at a national level. Objective: to introduce youth to plant development, to increase their awareness of plant adaptation in difficult environments (e.g., this very windy region) and to explain the life cycle of various species.
“An industrial facility can co-exist with an establishment that is very close to nature and dedicated to its preservation.”
Guillaume Pélerin, landscape architect
Protecting Vauville's nature reserve (France)
AREVA is a partner in the Vauville nature reserve, in Manche, and contributes to the increase of knowledge and the enabling of schoolchildren in the region to discover the fauna and flora. A walk to the site of a pond that plays host to southern species in the middle of Normandy.
The Vauville pond features a line of coastal dunes that encloses a large body of fresh water. Situated between Cap de Flamanville in the south and the Nez-de-Jobourg in the north, the pond is more than 10 kilometers long and 1 kilometer deep. In addition to being Normandy's richest site for amphibian life, this pond is equally noted for its bird species. The large number of natural habitats in the reserve is a sign of its biodiversity.
“The objective of the partnership with AREVA is to promote new knowledge and highlight the reserve's uniqueness. This includes its fauna and flora, but also the origin of the reserve and pond. It’s our duty to take care of this place and we have major work planned to maintain the dunes…”
Thierry Demarest, reserve conservationist
Preserving Beauguillot’s natural environment (France)
Created in 1980, the Domaine de Beauguillot national nature reserve in Manche protects fauna, flora and habitats. The AREVA foundation contributes to the preservation of this site, which plays host to stopping over and wintering birds, and facilitates visits by ever larger numbers of nature-lovers.
This reserve is recognized nationally and internationally for its flora, fauna and habitats. It is an important spot for migrating, molting and wintering sea birds and also welcomes one-quarter of France’s harbor seals. About 34,000 people visit the reserve every year.
Protecting cetaceans in Cotentin (France)
AREVA supports the Cotentin cetacean study group, which is developing a plan for the protection of large dolphins and runs educational awareness activities. Trip out to sea at the foot of Cape La Hague, where the largest colony of dolphins in Europe lives.
This association promotes awareness of species protection among ocean goers and the general public. It gathers information on the mammals that visit the Normandy coast—including the largest colony of dolphins in Europe. AREVA has supported the association for more than 5 years, enabling it to coordinate rescue operations for beached dolphins and observer networks and to implement marine mammal study programs.
“AREVA was one of the first to believe in our idea of developing a project aimed at studying and protecting these large dolphins.”
Gérard Mauger, Founder of the Association Groupe d'Étude des Cétacés du Cotentin
Environmental protection in La Hague (France)
AREVA is a partner to four environmental protection organizations near to its La Hague facility, in Manche. Their initiatives concern the study of cetaceans, the preservation of fauna and flora, or knowledge relating to natural environments. Walk with commentary.
