India: Association François-Xavier Bagnoud

The community working for people affected by AIDS
The Association François-Xavier Bagnoud develops “FXB Villages” in countries affected by AIDS and poverty. One was created in the State of Medinipur, with the support of the AREVA Foundation. The model is based on: mutual community assistance and sharing.
Restoring social links
In some countries, with the spread of AIDS and impoverishment of the population, it can be difficult to find homes for orphans.
In the most deeply affected countries, first-born children are increasingly becoming the heads of families. We must therefore strengthen community resources so that vulnerable children can be cared for, protected and raised properly.
Creating model villages
The Association François-Xavier Bagnoud has developed the FXB Village, a model of development:
- based on the community,
- improved over the years, thanks to continual dialogue between local beneficiaries and Association staff.
First set up in Uganda and Rwanda in the early 1990s, the FXB Village has since been replicated in Burundi, India and Thailand.
An FXB Village was created in Medinipur (an Indian State in West Bengal). Thanks to support from the AREVA Foundation, 80 families (over 500 people) deeply affected by poverty and AIDS are benefiting from this participatory program for sustainable community development. Within 3 years, they will achieve economic and social autonomy. Once they are no longer in poverty and their overall capacity has been strengthened, these families will be in a position to care for, protect and raise orphans and vulnerable children within their community.
