India: Association de Dominique Lapierre

Hospital boats equipped for travel to isolated communities
The AREVA Foundation is working alongside Dominique Lapierre to support 2 hospital boats that serve the Ganges delta.
A committed writer
Dominique Lapierre is well known in India, where he has advocated on behalf of the most disadvantaged since 1981. He has focused international attention on his work through a number of books.
He also founded the Association action pour les enfants des lépreux de Calcutta, an association dedicated to the children of lepers in Calcutta. Objective: to gather funding for initiatives by 14 Indian NGOs in Calcutta, rural Bengal and the Sundarbans on the Ganges delta. These local NGOs assist communities primarily with health and education issues.
The Ganges ambulance
In 1996, in partnership with Southern Health Improvement Samity (SHIS), an Indian NGO, the writer purchased an old ferry at the port of Calcutta.
He renovated and equipped it with medical equipment including:
- a generator,
- a radiology device,
- a laboratory,
- all of the items required for small emergency surgeries.
The “Cité de la Joie” association
Dominique Lapierre founded the “Cité de la Joie” with his wife to help children with leprosy in Calcutta. The association participates in numerous humanitarian projects in the Gangees valley. The AREVA Foundation is committed with Dominique Lapierre to supporting two of the four boats for 3 years.
Three more boats were subsequently added to the fleet. The 4 boats, now known as the Ganges ambulance, serve around 40 islands 300 days per year.
The AREVA Foundation committed to helping Dominique Lapierre support 2 of these hospital boats for 3 years.
