Mongolia: solidarity projects

Four flagship solidarity projects
AREVA provides support to a number of patronage activities aimed at improving the quality of life in Mongolia. In 2007, its initiatives focused on 3 regions affected by rural depopulation and on shelters and health care facilities for disadvantaged children in the Mongolian capital of Oulan-Bator.
AREVA in Mongolia
AREVA is involved in Mongolia, a country with 2.5 million residents, 50% of whom are nomads that make a living from herding. Multiple droughts and severe cold spells have caused significant livestock losses that have damaged the economy. The country is also facing a dramatic problem of rural depopulation: nearly 1.2 million people—around half of the population—live in the capital city, Oulan-Bator.
In 2007, AREVA launched 4 patronage projects in the sums, or districts, of Ulaanbadrakh, Sainshand and Tsagaan Ovoo, as well as the capital, Oulan-Bator.
Sainshand: initiatives for disadvantaged families
Activities included supplying medical materials to hospitals, educating children, and supplying computer equipment and assistance to unmarried women who are poor and homeless. In October 2007, traditional dwellings called yurts were dedicated to 10 families selected on the basis of social criteria.
Ulaanbadrakh: equipment to discourage rural depopulation
Activities included setting up computer labs for the school and hospital, equipping the delivery room of the same hospital, digging a well, and helping to replenish goat livestock in order to discourage mass exodus to cities.
Tsagaan Ovoo: access to clean drinking water
The population is primarily rural (goat herders) and lacks access to clean drinking water. The water available is extremely polluted and the source of numerous health problems, especially among children. AREVA financed the construction of a well to improve the quality of life for these people.
Oulan-Bator: medical materials and state orphanage renovations
In the capital, activities are focused on supporting disadvantaged children. Assistance in the form of medical materials was provided to the infant cardiology unit at the Mother and Child Hospital. AREVA also supports the state orphanage, which was created in 1974 and houses 120 children between the ages of 3 and 7. In 2007, this support enabled upgrades to the cafeteria, equipment and dormitories.
