Mongolia: Mother and Child Hospital

Support for the first pediatrics hospital
AREVA is supporting the first hospital in Mongolia to specialize in pediatrics. Specifically, the group enabled the purchase of a portable echocardiography device.
A discouraging economic situation
Since breaking away from the Soviet Union in 1991, Mongolia has suffered greatly due to the loss of financial and energy support from Russia. The result was a major economic crisis, which persists to this day. This crisis, combined with the effects of harsh winters and droughts, intensifies the problems faced by a predominantly rural population, 43% of whom live below the poverty line even today.
In collaboration with local community representatives, AREVA is involved in priority areas (education, health, access to water, rebuilding of livestock). The group supports various projects in the Sainchard region: mobile dental care, humanitarian aid for impoverished families, etc.
The Mother and Child Hospital and 2 orphanages in Ulaanbaatar, the capital, are also AREVA partners.
A first for Mongolia
The Mother and Child Hospital is the only hospital in Mongolia that specializes in pediatrics. The hospital welcomes children from the capital city and all 21 other regions. Like most hospitals in the country, this establishment is under-equipped in terms of diagnostic and treatment resources.
Created in September 1955, the pediatric cardiac care unit treats around 800 patients per year. Heart problems in children vary widely, and the resources and medical skills available in the unit are limited.
In 2008, AREVA provided financial support for the purchase of a portable echocardiography device for the unit—the first ever installed in Mongolia.
