Niger: Comité Français de Secours aux Enfants

Men working in the Niger Agapé center

Creating a training center for the baking trade

Since the beginning, support for education and professional training are the major ways that AREVA has been involved in Niger society. In partnership with the Comité Français de Secours à L'Enfance (CFSE), a French child relief organization, AREVA is supporting the creation of a professional training center in Niamey for the baking trade.

Youth professional training programs: Agapè (Niger)

The Agapè organization combats malnutrition by offering a trade and a job to young people in difficulty in Niamey and Arlit, with the support of AREVA. Testimonies of a bakery/pastry-making trainer and a young man keen to pass on what he has learnt.

Learning a trade

This project, carried out by the Comité Français de Secours aux Enfants (CFSE), aims to:

  • train youth,
  • help them acquire a trade,
  • help them make nutritional products from local ingredients.

The trainees are underemployed youth chosen for their aptitude and a demonstrated willingness to enroll in a 1-year economic or social initiative after the course. One-third of those enrolled—12 youth—come from the Arlit and/or Agadez regions.

Even more graduates

Today, 3 youth from the first graduating class work at a new bakery and pastry shop called the Croustillant in Niamey. A fourth is working in Imouraren.

The graduation ceremony for the second class of 7 youth—3 of whom are from Arlit—took place on July 12, 2009.

A third class began in October/November 2009.
