Niger: Akokan secondary school

Supporting the education system
Since 2003, educational support is one of the major ways that AREVA has been involved in Niger. Renovations at the Akokan school in Niger demonstrated AREVA’s continued support for the education system. Thirteen classrooms were completely upgraded, in terms of both structure and equipment.
Renovation of middle schools in Niger
In the schools of Arlit and Akokan, AREVA has invested in providing the best working conditions for the pupils. Installation of doors, windows, fans and electricity: all of the improvements needed to allow studying in all weather from now on. The people involved tell their story.
The secondary school in the mining city of Akokan was renovated thanks to AREVA's support. In fact:
- the premises were previously in an advanced state of disrepair,
- there weren't enough desks,
- the buildings were dilapidated,
- the laboratory lacked suitable equipment and materials,
- the school failed to meet the standards in effect for secondary institutions.
A total of 13 classrooms have been renovated. The school officially re-opened on January 28, 2009.
