Mentoring disadvantaged youth

A human and educational experience

Group staff, in partnership with the association Un Avenir Ensemble, sponsors young people from underprivileged backgrounds. The objective: to guide them in their professional future.

Mentoring: a philosophy

Mentoring a young person involves listening, giving advice, providing them some insight into the world of business, to give them confidence, and thus to help them start their professional life.

Each staff member in the group can bring his or her own personal touch to this project, providing guidance to young people from childhood until they enter the workforce, or during the construction phase of a project, in searching for a job.

AREVA staff who provide this sort of mentoring are using their particular skills within a volunteer context.

An example of mentoring in Paris

In Paris, AREVA is investing in the studies of 5 young women studying at the Lycée Buffon, in partnership with the association Un Avenir Ensemble.

Created by General Kelche, Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, this association comes to the aid of young people from modest or disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them complete their studies and enter into the workforce, thanks to a system of mentoring. It is based on a network of members of the Legion of Honor and the National Order of Merit, along with decorated veterans awarded the military medal.

Exemplary students

The high school selected the young women according to 3 criteria:

  • Determination to succeed and academic results
  • Stability of home life
  • Exemplary behavior

This personal support should enable these young women to choose the way they will move forward, and then assist them in their job search (drafting résumés, preparing for interviews, etc).

These girls are being mentored by 5 AREVA employees, who will provide them with support until they enter the workforce.

Mentoring by listening and giving advice

The mentor is a contact, sometimes the only one, between the young person and the rest of society. In cooperation with families and educators, mentors offer advice and support, assist in accessing information and provide a listening ear, among other things, in order to help youth progress. Mentoring does not include academic support.
