AREVA has been awarded contracts for the construction of six biomass power plants, four in Brazil and two in Thailand, for a total amount of more than 70M€.
The contracts are with CCC Machinery in Germany and Bua Sommai Electricity Generating Company in Thailand, respectively.
The power plants, with unit capacities of 10 and 12 MW, will be fuelled either with wood waste or with rice husk, the non-edible envelope of rice grain.
These biomass power plants will supply competitively priced electricity to the rural regions where they will be installed and generate Carbon Emission Reduction Certificate tradable under the Kyoto Protocol.
The projects in Brazil represent the largest turn-key plant order received by AREVA Renewable Energy activities.
AREVA Renewable Energy activities (including biomass, wind power and fuel cells) have been regrouped in November 2006 into a new Business Unit, which is a natural complement to the group's nuclear activity which offers CO2 free electricity generation.
