Canada: COGEMA Resources wins permit extension for McClean uranium mine
Brief
November 13, 2002
On 7 November, the Canadian Federal Court of Appeal granted a stay of execution for a 23 September ruling of a lower court revoking the operating permit for the McClean mine in Saskatchewan, giving owner/operator COGEMA Resources Inc. and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) time to prepare their appeal. In the meantime, COGEMA Resources is allowed to operate the McClean mine and plant. The 23 September decision was based solely on technical and administrative criteria for the permitting process and did not cast doubt on the quality of the site's environmental management.
