Russia to shut down plutonium production reactors in 2006

Under a 1997 accord with the United States, the Russian government agreed to cease producing defense-grade plutonium. The two Siberian reactors that produced the majority of the plutonium will shut down in 2005 and a third reactor will shut down in 2006.
