Worldwide nuclear power generation rises again

Brief

April 17, 2003

A survey of 2002 power generation statistics for the world's nuclear power plants puts the total at 2,677.5 TWh, indicating a 1.2% increase in this source of electricity compared with 2001.
The primary contributors to this rise are improved reactor load factors, which rose from 81.6% to 82.2%, up 0.7%, and the addition of around 3,500 MWe in capacity with the startup of four new reactors: China's Qinshan II-1 (642 MWe) and Ling Ao 1 (985 MWe), South Korea's Yonggwang (1000 MWe) and Japan's Onagawa 3 (825 MWe).
