Press release
April 18, 2002
Treatment activity :
During this period, the Establishment treated (1) 3.3 tons of spent fuel assemblies from a batch of OBRIGHEIM fuel (PWR) and from BRUNSBUTTEL (BWR).
From all treated assemblies, a total of 232.6 tons have been processed to date this year. Three of the six lines of vitrification of fission products were in service. Since the beginning of the year, 107 canisters have been produced. It should be noted that the facility of compaction of hulls (ACC) produced 26 canisters of residues compacted (2) since its startup at the end of 2001.
(1)the Treatment consists in separating, within spent fuel, on the one hand, the reusable materials - uranium and plutonium - in order to recycle them and, on the other hand, the ultimate residues - fission products and other waste - in order to condition them in a sure way.
(2)It is about the metal envelope of the spent fuel assemblies as well as metal waste resulting from maintenance operations of the installations.
