AREVA announced today that former U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham has accepted the appointment as Chairman of the Board of AREVA Inc.
As Non-Executive Chairman, Secretary Abraham will be supporting AREVA's business expansion in North America, and will bring to the group his excellent knowledge of the world energy market and international decision-makers. Secretary Abraham's appointment becomes effective on March 1, 2006.
“Secretary Abraham has been one of the true leaders for the advancement of nuclear power in America, and indeed, around the world. He is well respected and offers our company unique insights and authority,” said Anne Lauvergeon, Chairman of the Executive Board of AREVA.
“I've always been impressed with AREVA and its achievements in the nuclear energy market. Their recent joint venture with Constellation Energy to establish UniStar Nuclear is an example of a unique concept for building the next generation of nuclear power plants in the U.S. I look forward to joining the innovative and experienced AREVA U.S. and continuing to support America's push for energy security and energy independence,” Secretary Abraham said.
Today, AREVA Inc. has 5,300 employees and 2005 revenues of nearly $1,8 billion. With 40 locations in 20 states, AREVA is the leading U.S. nuclear vendor and a key player in the electricity transmission and distribution sector.
Secretary Abraham also serves as Chairman and CEO of The Abraham Group, an international strategic consulting firm based in Washington, DC that focuses on all sectors of the energy market. He served as U.S. Secretary of Energy from 2001 to 2005. Prior to joining the cabinet, he represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate from 1995 to 2001.
