Press release
NUCLEAR POWER / MINING
March 26, 2009
AREVA CEO Anne Lauvergeon, a member of the delegation joining French President Nicolas Sarkozy on his visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, has signed an agreement with Congolese Minister of Mines, Martin Kabwelulu, on uranium prospecting and mining.
Democratic Republic of Congo’s size and geographical profile have given it major uranium reserves.
The agreement includes the creation of a mixed commission tasked with developing a technical prospecting program. The work to be jointly performed by the parties will kick off with a detailed inventory of mining sites and update of all databases.
For AREVA and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this agreement is made in a spirit of sustainable development that they wish to turn into a win-win partnership to develop the country’s mining resources.
