According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, a period of drought and a locust plague mean that Niger is now facing a famine affecting almost 2.5 million people including 800,000 children.
AREVA, a longstanding partner in the country through its subsidiaries SOMAIR and COMINAK (Mining Business Unit), has decided to demonstrate its solidarity with the people of Niger.
True to its approach of partnering NGO activities on the field, the group is supporting an operation led by the French association "Réunir" (reunite) and will meet the cost of chartering two aircraft each transporting 18 metric tons of food, as well as the purchase of six additional tons of nutritional supplements requiring neither water nor cooking. The total contribution amounts to around 120,000 euros.
Since June, the group has given 130,500 euros in emergency aid to the Food Crisis Cell in Niger.
Furthermore, all local employees got together and made a donation of 12,500 euros.
