AREVA announced that it has signed an agreement with EDF Energy to manufacture forgings for the first EPR™ reactor to be built at Hinkley point, South-West England. The accord is a key step towards the construction of the United Kingdom’s first 2 EPR™ reactors planned by EDF.
The AREVA group is also in commercial discussions with Horizon Nuclear Power and NuGeneration for the supply of up to 6 additional EPR™ reactors in the United Kingdom.
The EPR™ reactor is currently undergoing the Generic Design Assessment process in the United Kingdom. British regulators have recently reiterated their confidence in AREVA’s generation III+ reactor, which meets the highest safety standards. The EPR™ reactor is currently being built in Finland, France and China and the certification process is underway in the United States.
AREVA CEO, Luc Oursel, said: “This agreement confirms the United Kingdom’s commitment to promote nuclear power, a sustainable, economically-viable and low-carbon energy source. It represents a milestone for AREVA’s new build projects in the country.”
