Safety and security at every phase of the shipment

World leader in the nuclear industry, AREVA puts its expertise and its vast experience at the service of its customers, electricity utilities, and of researchers by offering comprehensive solutions for the transport of nuclear material from preparation of the project to its delivery. And all of this is done under the best safety and security conditions to ensure the protection of the material, of people and of the environment.
Customized routes and treatment
- There are several transport modes for the shipment of nuclear material. Far upstream of the transport project, AREVA, in collaboration with the customer, analyses all of the characteristics of the load: volume and radioactivity of the material, distance of the route, geography...
- The project is planned, the transportation means selected, and authorizations requested.
- AREVA makes a fleet of specially adapted trucking, rail and maritime nuclear transport equipment available to its customers.
Casks secured with high technology
- To guarantee perfect leaktightness, AREVA selects or designs casks best adapted to the characteristics of the material to be transported.
- The cask protects the public, operators and the environment from radiation.
- Numerous years of research, studies, calculations and resistance tests are necessary for the design and manufacturing of a cask.
- All licenses and casks must be validated by the authorities of each country passed through.
Permanent dialogue between operators and the authorities
- AREVA defines the transport scheme in collaboration with the shipper, the recipient, industrial partners, competent authorities and shipping companies, and maintains contact with the authorities of the different countries to obtain the numerous authorizations indispensable to the transport of nuclear material.
- International regulations mandated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) strictly outline the rules for the transport of nuclear material. This agency is complemented by rigorous national and international regulations specific to each transport mode.
Constant surveillance and the possibility to intervene throughout the entire route
- It is imperative to continually guarantee the integrity of the contents and the safety of the shipment.
- A surveillance center enables AREVA operators to track the shipments in real time.
- Each step of the route and every change of transport mode are done under rigorous inspections and radiological verifications by accredited organizations.
- 24-hour on-call teams, including a mobile cell for in-the-field interventions, are mobilized to reinforce the competent authorities.
Emergency teams in face of crises
Crisis management operations are established in case of any incident. Key players can be instantly mobilized including emergency squads specialized in nuclear materials, medical teams and members of various administrative departments. Drills are carried out every year to keep all actors in the highest state of readiness. At AREVA, a transport crisis management center provides a centralized location where the command post along with the technical and communications cells work in close collaboration.
