AREVA Hanford

AREVA, on behalf of WRPS, is taking part in the clean-up and dismantling of the large military storage site at Hanford in the United States.
In June 2008, WRPS (Washington River Protection Solutions, LLC) was entrusted by the DOE (American Department of Energy) with management of the clean-up and dismantling program for the underground chemical and radioactive waste vessels at the Hanford site (Washington State). With a view to protecting the Columbia River and its surrounding area, the contract relates to the construction and operations activities that would allow the waste to be stored, recovered and treated and the storage center dismantled.
On behalf of WRPS, AREVA has provided a team of specialists with a wealth of experience in clean-up operations for the site. AREVA is also supplying its state-of-the-art technologies for chemical clean-up and vitrification of the radioactive waste.
The group is involved in several aspects of the clean-up of this major military site:
- Clean-up of cells and pools
- Characterization and stabilization of radioactive waste
- Supply of systems for treating liquid effluents
The 170 underground vessels at the Hanford site contain around 200,000 cubic meters of chemical and radioactive waste.
