PNTL: maritime transport of nuclear materials

AREVA holds a 12.5% stake in the PNTL (Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd). PNTL specializes in maritime transport of nuclear materials. Established in 1975, it has a fleet of 3 vessels specially-designed for this purpose.
Highly specialized operations
The nuclear materials are transported by ships that are selected according to the material being transported. Specially-equipped chartered vessels are used in the case of irradiated fuels, vitrified waste or MOX fuel. Radioactive material is placed in secure shipping containers designed for this purpose.
PNTL has carried out more than 170 maritime voyages carrying nuclear materials over the last 30 years. More than 2,000 transport containers have been shipped by the firm. PNTL has handled the following materials:
- Used nuclear fuel from commercial reactors, transported from Japan to ports in the United Kingdom and France
- High-level vitrified waste transported from France to Japan
- MOX fuel (mix of oxides) transported from the United Kingdom and France to Japan
- Used fuel from research reactors (materials testing reactors) from Japan and Europe transported to the United States
- Plutonium dioxide from the United States transported to Europe
AREVA holds a 12.5% stake in PNTL. The rest of the capital is held by BNFL (62.5%) and Overseas Recycling Committee (25%). The fleet is managed by James Fisher and Sons, of Barrow, England.

- ISO 14001, for environmental management systems.
PNTL has implemented and utilizes a fully integrated management system designed to meet to all standards in terms of quality, safety and environmental protection as required by its customers and by regulatory agencies.
