Operations: heavy equipment production

Handling of a steam generator for the Olkiluoto EPR™ reactor

Steam generators, vessel covers or pressurizers, the Chalon/Saint-Marcel plant manufactures heavy equipment for French and foreign utility companies. Its manufacturing range covers the new power plant market and the market for replacement of existing power plant components.

3D virtual tour of the Chalon Saint-Marcel plant

A major player in the fabrication of strategic components of nuclear power plants, the Chalon Saint-Marcel plant implements processes and equipment at the cutting edge of technology. A virtual visit into the heart of their workshops, unique in their dimensions and level of quality.

Heavy component manufacturing

The establishment manufactures:

  • Reactor vessels, vessel covers and internal equipment.
  • Steam generators.
  • Pressurizers.
  • Auxiliary components such as accumulators, boron injection tanks and support structures.

It is currently the leading industrial site in the world for manufacturing components for EPR™ type generation III+ reactors.

Activity in figures

Since its inauguration in 1975, the Chalon/Saint-Marcel plant has manufactured the heavy components for all the French 900 MW and 1450 MW capacity nuclear power plants and has supplied 545 heavy components to its customers worldwide.312 steam generators:

  • 78 reactor vessels and closure heads,
  • 76 closure heads (spare parts),
  • 321 steam generators,
  • 70 pressurizers.

Almost 420 of them have been installed in French nuclear power plants and 125 others in Europe, Asia, South Africa, and the United States.

To keep pace with its development on international markets, AREVA is increasing the plant’s production capacity. The investment made over the next few years will raise the annual production output from around 1.7 equivalent EPR™ reactors today, to an average of 2.7 per year.

Exceptional components

The plant covers 35 hectares and consists of 39 000m2 covered workshops near the Sane's port facilities, from which the manufactured components are transported to the Mediterranean. It also occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of major European rail and road traffic routes.

It develops precision techniques for the main welding, molding, rustproof alloy overlay, heat treatment, machining, tubing in clean rooms, and inspection operations.

The plant enjoys top scientific and technical support thanks to the Calculations division which provides the calculation expertise and resources for the finished elements, fatigue studies and fracture mechanics, and to the Technical Center which develops non-destructive inspection and welding techniques.
