AREVA’s EPR™ reactor is an evolution of the most advance pressurized water reactors and has been designed to satisfy the demand for a new generation of safer, more competitive power plants. Relying on decades of R&D programs in France and Germany, the EPR™ is the product of the contribution from leading European nuclear utilities and the return on experience of several thousand reactor-years operation. This 1650+MWe pressurized water reactor is also the only Generation III+ reactor to be deployed at an international level and is currently under construction in Finland, France, and China.
The EPR™ reactor builds upon the most recent evolution of light water reactor technology and is positionned at the cutting edge of a continuous innovation process.
The EPR™ reactor has been designed with unparalleled safety levels, highly resistant to internal and external hazards as well as combination of hazards.
The EPR™reactor has been licensed and approved by the world’s most demanding organization. It is under construction in France, Finland and China
AREVA first fleet of EPR™ reactors rests on a solid foundation of extensive building experience, with continuous construction of 102 nuclear power plants since the 1970s and operation of Light water reactors worldwide.
The EPR™ provides from uranium and plutonium safe, sustainable electricity from an exceptionally cost-effective source of energy at a long-term predictable cost, particularly in the context of fossil fuel depletion.
Thanks to its enhanced safety and its high efficiency, the EPR™ improves upon existing light water reactors to the benefit of the environment.
The EPR™ layout offers exceptional and unique resistance to internal or external hazards or combination of hazards, especially earthquake and large airplane crash.
EPR™ reactor: Safety robustness (3D animation)
AREVA's EPR™ reactor satisfies the most stringent safety standards. This means: An EPR™ unit would remain intact on the outside even in the event of an extreme impact. This animation demonstrates how the robustness of the EPR™ safety concept is ensured.
