Centers of excellence

lobby of the technical training center, Lynchburg United States

In order to develop and implement its solutions, products and services, the Installed Base business unit (BU) has, in Europe and in the United States, development centers and training centers fitted out with state-of-the-art equipment that guarantees the quality of maintenance services. In addition, centers contain international-class hot workshops, assuring off-site maintenance.

Training centers fitted out with life-size mock-ups

The centers devoted to maintenance teams’ training and assessment recreate working conditions identical to those encountered in power plants.

More than 7,600 square meters of installations are dedicated to training in Germany, France (CETIC) and the United States (Lynchburg).

These centers are equipped with mock-ups which faithfully reproduce original components such as:

  • reactor vessels,
  • internal equipment,
  • steam generators,
  • pressurizers,
  • fuel handling equipment,
  • vessel heads,
  • a fuel pit for a pressurized water reactor (PWR) and a boiling water reactor (BWR) with its moving reloading crane.

This equipment is made available to the AREVA teams and those of the operators in order to:

  • validate the maintenance techniques in power plants,
  • assess the tools used,
  • train the teams before a maintenance operation,
  • offer on-going training linked with the development of technology and legislation.

Hot workshops of international level for off-site maintenance

With its hot workshops in France and the United States, the BU has all of the resources necessary for off‑site maintenance of contaminated components, such as motor pump assembly motors, found throughout the world.

These off-site maintenance operations free the operators from the constraints linked with planning a shutdown. Thereby, they contribute to controlling the costs of maintenance and operation and to limiting the duration of the shutdowns.

These workshops have the facilities to:

  • dispatch and receive,
  • store,
  • decontaminate,
  • conduct service and repair,
  • dismantle contaminated components.

SOMANU

Located in Maubeuge, SOMANU has a 4,000 square meter hot workshop. It is equipped with the full range of tools for working on large contaminated components.

The Pump and Motor Services Center

In Lynchburg (Virginia, United States), the Pump and Motor Services Center is an international-class hot workshop, equipped with the very latest tools. With a surface area of 4,650 square meters, it is the largest installation of its kind in the United States.

Other maintenance centers in France

AREVA also has other maintenance centers in France with "hot bases" which perform various decontamination operations on the maintenance tools:

  • CEMO, in Châlon-sur-Saône,
  • CEDOS, in Sully-sur-Loire,
  • Intercontrôle in Cadarache.
