Commitment to sustainable development

Reactor coolant pump thermal barrier at the Jeumont plant

JSPM's commitments are in line with the AREVA group's policy which makes sustainable development the keystone of its industrial strategy.

Environment

The facility manages sampling from natural resources responsibly and limits its impact on the environment: waste, emissions and noise associated with its activities.

Waste management

Like any industrial site, JSPM generates conventional industrial waste.

  • Common industrial waste is placed in various containers depending on its nature or origin.
  • Hazardous industrial waste is subject to specific collection by approved collectors and is disposed of in duly authorized processing centers.

In 2008, the common industrial waste was valued in 100 % and the hazardous industrial waste was valued about 100 % (recycling material, regeneration or energy valuation).

Resource management

The water consumption for year 2008 decreased by 0,8 % with regard to the previous year in spite of the increase of the activities on the site. This result is the fruit of actions led for four years to detect quickly the leaks and decrease the water consumption.

The energies used within JSPM appear in the form of electrical energy and of gas.

  • The consumption of natural gas decreased by 58 % during year 2008. It is linked to weather conditions because the natural gas is used for the heating system of the whole site.
  • the consumption of electricity of the site decreased by 11,3 % In 2008,with regard to the previous year. it is essentially dependent on the  the tests performed on the equipments. These tests are essential to validate their reliability before delivery.

The efforts of reduction of the consumptions of JSPM are essentially on the other existing consumptions.

To note: in 2008, JSPM took part in the Trophies of the environmental performance organized by the Mission regional North Environment - Pas-de-Calais. This participation aimed at becoming known and at valuing at the regional level our actions the field of the environment (energy consumptions, waste processing)

A paper consumption reduction policy has also been introduced.

Health and safety

One of JSPM's major objectives is protecting the health and safety of personnel lead in collaboration with the Works Health and Safety Committees. This is a permanent concern and also a demonstrated desire to not have personnel present at the workplace incur risks. This initiative manifests itself in a policy of commitments:

  • systematic analysis in the event of an occupational accident,
  • introduction of preventative measures,
  • internal and external audits,
  • participative safety inspections with the aim of establishing a dialog and eliminating all hazardous acts or situations,
  • specific information-giving and awareness-raising campaigns, such as safety notices for the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (goggles, gloves etc.).

The management system of the Health, Safety and Security (HSS) is a management system combining persons and means to improve the performances of a company as regards health and safety at work according to the regulatory requirements.
It is an approach which aims in:

  • limit the dysfunctions as regards HSS;
  • increase the reactivity and the performances of the company in the risk prevention in HSS.

The site's medical division is an independent service.  They provide the medical follow-up of the employees of JSPM, employees of the outer companies occurring on the site, temporary employees and trainees. For every employee, a data sheet of individual exposure is drafted. Every data sheet foresees the medical monitoring suited according to the job and the nuisances to whom the employee is exposed (noise, chemical, work on screen(shield), etc.).

The Health Safety and Security of the site also leads actions on the site to:

  • validate the introduction of the new chemicals on the site;
  • deliver the notices of medical abilities;
  • contribute to the optimization of the health and the safety at work and in
  • the reduction of the number of occupational accidents;
  • train in the prevention and in the first aid;
  • assure the emergency care.

Its action is reinforced by the part-time presence on the site of a social worker.

A constant watchfulness is necessary to maintain the conditions of health and safety for all the persons present on the site. JSPM leans on the international reference base OHSAS 18001 which certifies the requirements applicable to the management of the health and the safety of the employees(wage earners). JSPM possesses the certification OHSAS 18001 since 2006.

Actions of prevention, monitoring, raising awareness and training are implemented every day. Any incident (or almost accident) activates an analysis. This initiative facilitates the experience feedback and the implication at every level in the treatment and the prevention of the incidents. The Visits "Hygienes Securité Environnement" allowed to detect acts and working conditions at risks. It is the joint representation which involves all the employees and the Committee for health and safety at  CHSCT).

Prevention and control of the risks technological

Technological risks
The prevention and the control of the technological risks are integrated in a permanent way into all the stages of the life of the installations: during their design, during their operation and during their dismantling.

Exercises with emergency services are regularly organized to optimize their efficiency in case of operation. Also they are consulted for the elaboration of the Internal Action plan ( PII).

Chemical risks
The use of chemicals at JSPM requires measures to protect the man and the environment against any risk: storage of chemicals on retention in suitable rooms (ventilated, cooled), etc.); Systematic labelling of chemicals; display in the workstations of the Data Safety(Security). These data sheets contain instructions to be followed as regards environment, safety and regards health.

JSPM is achieving the inventory of all the chemicals used on its site. Actions are led to substitute chemicals CMR* by other products presenting lesser risks for the human health and the environment, according to the regulation in force and in the requirements of the AREVA group.

Risks linked to the transport
JSPM applies the international regulations concerning hazardous materials, in particular ADR* for the road transport. JSPM counts two Security transport Advisers Safety. They have to make sure that the activities of transport are executed in the respect for the applicable regulations and in the safety optimal conditions: specific packing (casks), answering the international standards so as to warrant the protection of the public and the environment against any release; vehicles adapted to every type of transport; means and devices to prevent and limit the consequences in the event of an accident.

Skills development and job management

The growth in activities and numerous retirements have led JSPM to initiate major Human Resources campaigns in order to perpetuate its expertise and support its development.

In addition to an unprecedented recruitment plan based on primarily technical profiles, a manpower planning study has also been initiated to identify the key skills and their exchange, combined with a voluntary &uot;sandwich course&uot; policy.

JSPM continues its efforts as regards recruitment  to anticipate the future retirements and especially to answer the increase of its activity. This increase is linked to the stake under construction of new power plants in the world as well as to the maintenance of the existing power plants. Thanks to an active policy of recruitment, JSPM in 2008 had 569 employee..

Training

JSPM proposes training courses to its employees within the framework of the development of their skills. Important training initiatives, in particular in the field of the services, were realized in the last quarter 2008. The number of training hours per person was of 36 hours, what is superior to the objectives of the AREVA group (30 hours / persons). At the same time as the effort of training of its employees, JSPM welcomes every year trainees. They can complete their theoretical training by partsharing on subjects varied in the various departments of the company.

The AREVA group has signed an agreement in favor of equal opportunities. Within this context, JSPM is endeavoring to increase male-female equality and employ handicapped persons.
