INTERCONTROLE: non-destructive examinations

For over 30 years, INTERCONTROLE, a subsidiary of AREVA, has been developing, qualifying and implementing procedures for automated non-destructive testing on main components in nuclear power plants. Its activities include in-service inspection, technical assistance and the sale of software and equipment.
A subsidiary of AREVA, INTERCONTROLE is world leader in pressurized water reactor (PWR) vessel inspection and one of the frontrunners in the field of steam generator tube inspection. It also carries out in-service inspections of a variety of safety-related components.
Inspection of components for nuclear power plants
INTERCONTROLE works in the following fields:
- Reactor vessels: vessels, vessel heads, bolts
- Steam generators (SG): integrated services including tube bundle inspection, coordination of all SG maintenance operations, from opening to closing, with tube plugging where required.
- Pressurizers: inspection of the bimetallic joint and welds on the surge line.
- Other components in the reactor coolant system: control rods, guide tube pins, baffle assembly screws for internal hardware, in-core instrumentation system thimbles, residual heat removal system piping, main steam lines and chemical and volume control system nozzles
Highly sophisticated techniques are used to meet the high performance levels required:
- Focalized ultrasound
- Multi-frequency eddy currents
- Gamma radiography
- Acoustic listening
INTERCONTROLE uses highly qualified operators to carry out the inspections. They use high‑performance equipment and sophisticated data acquisition and analysis systems, developed and qualified by Intercontrôle according to French and international codes (RSEM, ASME).
