Reactors and Services business group markets

In-services Inspections (Daya Bay - China)

A major player in the design and construction of next generation nuclear reactors, AREVA is strengthening its worldwide presence thanks to its integrated product range. Europe and Asia are focusing on new power plant projects. The United States remains a key market for the maintenance and improvement of existing power plants. The United States is also planning new nuclear plants.

Europe: the EPR™ reactor in the forefront

In Europe, AREVA has an established presence in France and Germany. It is also well-positioned to serve major nuclear operators in other countries.

The government of the United Kingdom has committed to an extensive new nuclear power program. Backed by 11 large electric utilities, AREVA submitted a request for certification of its EPR™ reactor in 2007. Two major electric utilities, EDF and E.ON, have now decided to make this reactor type their preferred system for all operations in the UK.

Italy, the first country to terminate the operation of its reactors, is renewing its interest in nuclear energy. In 2009, the electric utilities ENEL and EDF announced their plans to jointly develop a group of at least 4 EPR™ reactors in Italy.

Three of the 5 current EPR™ reactor construction projects are located in Europe:

  • in Olkiluoto, Finland,
  • in Flamanville, France,
  • in Penly, France (on order).

North America: a booming market

The United States represents the largest nuclear market in the world, with 104 reactors now in service. The construction of new nuclear power facilities should begin in the next two years. In his State of the Union address in January 2010 before the members of Congress, President Barak Obama clearly stated the need to "(build) a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in (the United States)".

AREVA has secured a leading position in the United States, particularly in the following markets:

  • replacement of heavy equipment in operational power plants,
  • modernization of command and control systems,
  • extension of service life.

North America is also the largest market in the world for nuclear measurement. Some 48% of AREVA’s nuclear measurement revenue is from North America.

AREVA is also aiming to build at least 7 reactors in North America. The group has already invested 200 million dollars in the certification of its EPR™reactor, certification which should be obtained in 2011.

Historical agreement in civil nuclear in India

Anne Lauvergeon signed an agreement protocol with India in the field of civil nuclear power on February 4, 2009 in Delhi. The text foresees AREVA’s construction of between 2 and 6 EPR™ reactors for the electrical utility NPCIL. Report on an epoch-making first.

Asia: success through the integrated business model

China is seeking to increase its nuclear production capacity tenfold by 2030. Six new reactors are already under construction or are the subject of invitations to tender. AREVA is constructing the first 2 EPR™-type nuclear islands in Taishan (Guangdong) and will supply all of the materials and services necessary for their operation for 15 years. This partnership demonstrates the benefits and appreciation of the group's industrial model which offers integrated products for the entire nuclear fuel cycle.

To support its economic growth, India intends to generate an additional 16,000 MW of nuclear power between 2007 and 2012, equivalent to 25-30 new reactors. The Indian electric utility NPCIL has signed an agreement with AREVA to construct at least 2 EPR™ reactors in Jaitapur. Furthermore, the group has already been chosen to supply uranium.

Worldwide: maintenance activities showing rapid growth

The Reactors and Services business group continues to benefit from market investments made by power companies to maintain, optimize the performance of, or modernize their production facilities to guarantee competitive services.

  • Modernization of the command & control systems underway in Sweden, Finland, the USA and in Eastern European countries.
  • Supply of steam generators and replacement vessel heads in France, the United States, Sweden, China, South Korea.
  • Several contracts for services, inspections or performance improvements in the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa.
