The Reactors and Services business group

The Reactors and Services business group designs and manufactures pressurized water (PWR) or boiling water (BWR) nuclear reactors and vessel propulsion reactors. It also supplies the equipment and services necessary for the operation, maintenance, improvement, or modernization of all types of nuclear power plant.
Six complementary activities
New builds
- The businesses: the design, construction, and commissioning of nuclear reactors of the PWR or BWR type. Thereby, AREVA has manufactured more than 100 reactors. AREVA is the first constructor in the world to have obtained orders for new reactors of generation III+ since 1999.
- Figures: 87 PWRs supplied, that is one third of the 264 PWRs installed worldwide.
Equipment
- The businesses: the design and manufacture of forged parts, large components (vessels, steam generators, ..) and mobile components (primary coolant pumps, control rod drive mechanisms) for nuclear power plants.
- Figures: more than 575 heavy components have already been supplied across the globe since the 1970s. AREVA is the world leader in the field of replacing heavy components for nuclear reactors.
Nuclear Services
- The businesses: innovative integrated solutions for maintenance,improvement of performance, and modernization of power plants. It also supplies instrumentation and control systems and engineering services.
- Figures: AREVA offers the most extensive portfolio of products and services in the world for all types of reactor. The group has an 18% share in this market.
Nuclear Measurements
- The businesses: supplying key systems for detecting and measuring radioactivity and monitoring the installations...
- Figures: via CANBERRA, AREVA possesses approximately a 35% share of this market.
Products and technology
- The businesses: developing and managing the reactor portfolio and key technologies, defining safety principles, managing licensing activities with nuclear security authorities. This BU also maintains and develops AREVA test and laboratories facilities.
- Figures: the request for certification of the US-EPR™ is in progress. Six major American electric power companies have already shown interest in this technology.
Propulsion and research reactors
- The businesses: design, construction, and maintenance of nuclear reactors for vessel propulsion and of low power for training, research, and nuclear medicine.
- Figures: for more than 35 years, the nuclear reactors designed by AREVA TA have propelled the French submarine fleet and a French aircraft carrier in all their operations
The EPR™ reactor, the first Generation III+ reactor under construction
AREVA's EPR™ reactor, a pressurized water reactor (PWR) of very high power (1,650 MWe), is the first Generation III+ reactor under construction in the world. Its innovative design and its proven reliability are the result of the expertise of the group which has already constructed 87 PWR reactors.
The EPR™ reactor permits the generation of power which is even safer and more economic thanks to the reduction in operating costs and the implementation of new safety systems. It optimizes the performance of the fuel, thus lowering the consumption of uranium and reducing the production of waste.
Nine new reactors are currently under construction or are on order worldwide. Five of these are AREVA EPR™ reactors.
