Research reactors

For more than 40 years, teams from the Propulsion and research reactors Business Unit have been involved in large civil works projects in France and around the world, designing and constructing nuclear research centers and reactors, scientific facilities and related tools intended for civilian use, research and well being.

Solutions for designers and operators

The Propulsion and research reactors Business Unit offers customers a range of value-added solutions related to the design, construction, startup, training and operational assistance, maintenance, renovation and end-of-life decommissioning and dismantling of small-scale, low-power nuclear reactors. Examples:

  • Research reactors
  • Multipurpose irradiation reactors for fundamental research, safety or the production of radioelements for medical use
  • Comprehensive nuclear study center
  • Subsystems
  • Experimental tools
  • Related storage and disposal facilities

Related requirements

Intended for applications that do not generate electric power and aimed at the needs of countries with existing or imminent research programs, the Propulsion and research reactors Business Unit’s solutions may take the form of:

  • Engineering services for new builds
  • Renovation and optimization services for installed bases
  • Equipment and instrumentation
  • Training
  • Implementation advice and assistance

The Propulsion and research reactors Business Unit also offers customers a knowledge of safety requirements as well as national and international regulations related to research facility performance. For more than 40 years, teams from the Propulsion and research reactors Business Unit have been designing and implementing reactors, non-power generating civilian nuclear facilities, fuel cycle facilities and large scientific instruments around the world.

Examples of applications

  • Design and construction engineering for the Jules Horowitz research reactor, and experimental support for third- and fourth-generation nuclear reactors (RJH - CEA)
  • Turnkey engineering for the La Maâmora nuclear research center (Morocco - CNESTEN) (general facilities, laboratories and cells, nuclear modules outside the reactor) and help launching the center’s operations
  • Installation of the MegaJoule Laser Synthetic Cell System (LMJ - CEA), which will replace the simulation of nuclear tests
  • Restoration of the High Flux Reactor’s internal components and structures (RHF - Institut Laue Langevin)
  • Instrumentation and control re-engineering for research reactors (Siloe, Osiris - CEA) (Elta)
  • Design and construction of a waste treatment facility for solid waste from the EPR™ reactor in Flamanville (EDF)
  • Decommissioning and dismantling studies for EL4 Brennilis (CEA)
  • A study to prepare the safety and regulatory documentation required for authorization to build the ITER facility (ITR - AREVA Risk Management Consulting S.A.S)
  • Study of a disposal center for low- and medium-level waste at the Ignalina nuclear power plant site in Lithuania
  • Design and construction engineering for a workshop to manage effluent (AGATE - CEA)
