An evolutionary design

Civaux Nuclear power Plant (France) - C Pauquet

The EPR™ reactor is the direct descended of the well-proven N4 and German KONVOI pressurized water reactors (PWR), the most modern reactors in France and Germany. The EPR™ reactor was designed by teams from KWU/Siemens and Framatome (now AREVA), EDF in France and the major German utilities, working in collaboration with both French and German safety authorities.

The heritage of several years of operating pressurized water reactors

The EPR™ reactor is a 1,650 MWe PWR. Its evolutionary design is based on experience from several thousand reactor-years of operation of Light Water Reactors worldwide, primarily those, currently in operation, incorporating the most recent technologies.

  • the N4 model : four nuclear power plants at Chooz and Civaux 1-2, in France,
  • the KONVOI model : five nuclear power plants at Neckarwestheim, Isar and Emsland n Germany.

The EPR™ design integrates the results of decades of research and development programs, in particular those carried out by the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) and the German Karlsruhe research center.

Through its N4 and KONVOI filiation, the EPR™ reactor totally benefits from an uninterrupted evolutionary and innovative process; it has a proven technology based on 87 PWRs built throughout the world.

AREVA's Saint-Marcel and JSPM plants (in Chalon and Jeumont) have gathered over thirty years of experience in the manufacturing of nuclear heavy components and are keeping it up to date.
