Licensing and construction experience

The EPR™ reactor has already been licensed and approved by the most demanding bodies.
It complies with the technical specification criteria issued by European electricity companies and the American Electric Power Research Institute.
World-class licensing record
The EPR™ reactor has already secured construction licenses from three of the world’s most demanding safety authorities in France, Finland and China :
- The Finnish electricity utility Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) signed a contract with the AREVA and Siemens consortium to build a turnkey EPR™ unit at the Olkiluoto site in Finland.
The construction permit was obtained on February 2005. - On January 23, 2007, EDF ordered AREVA’s 100th nuclear reactor, which is being built in France, on the Flamanville site.
The construction permit was awarded on April 10, 2007. - On November 26, 2007, AREVA and CGNPC signed a contract for the supply of two EPR™ Nuclear Islands on the new site of Taishan in China in the context of a long-term cooperation agreement.
The construction permit was awarded on August 2009.
It is also being considered by other countries :
- American operators are currently exploring the possibility of using the EPR™ technology to develop their own production capacity. The licensing process (a Design Certificate and a Combined Operating License) was launched in late December 2007.
- In October 2007, was launched a Design Licence (Generic Assessment Design) in the United Kingdom.
- In April 2008, E.ON chose the EPR™ reactor as its reference design for the new nuclear power plants in the United Kingdom.
The reactor EPR™ is a reality
The EPR™ is the first Generation III+ reactor being built in the world.
Four EPR™ reactor are under construction.
- at Olkiluoto in Finland, since late 2005 (future operator: TVO)
- at Flamanville in France, since mid-2007 (future operator: EDF)
- at Taishan in China, since August 2008 (future operator: China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp)
